The Crazies (1973)

pretty good thriller from george romero

although george a. romero doesn't stray too far from the zombie genre, he does tend to do a good job no matter what. the crazies isn't a zombie film, but rather a story about a virus outbreak that turns people insane and a small town that gets infected. the military swoops in and keeps the people in the dark while rounding them up and killing many of them. a good theme in this film is, 'who is really crazy?' and even though the special effects are dated and not impressive, it's still a good story and decent film. we'll see how the remake turned out.

Godzilla vs. Megalon (Gojira tai Megaro)

substandard monster fare

godzilla vs. megalon is one of the crappier japanese monster movies i've seen. there's this weird underwater civilization that releases megalon to destroy earth, and it's up to godzilla and jet jaguar (a robot that can grow to godzilla size at will) to stop him and some other bad monster. there are a few lulz, and very cheesy action sequences to be sure. it's just not that enjoyable. 5 stars cause it's godzilla and he's always badass.

The Wicker Man (1973)

The Original... DUH!

wow, i loved the wicker man. edward woodward and christopher lee were amazing in this unsettling (but not horrific) thriller. one of the most unique stories i've seen. i have never seen a movie deal with paganism and religion taking over a town like this. the film deals with religion and consumption of society, but at the same time has many elements of a hammer/christopher lee film. the wicker man itself is amazing, and the ending is definitely not designed for/by hollywood. i LOVED the wicker man, and cna't believe it was remade... by a fucking mormon of all people! booooo!
